What's on Your Nightstand--June Edition

Don't forget to enter my book giveaway HERE!!!!

On my nightstand this month--not very much! I'll start with the car book of the moment:

P and I are riveted by this book right now. The chapters about the immediate effect of the bomb dropping were horrific, but compelling to hear. The people are so vividly described that I feel they must be people I actually know. The visual images of horror, of acts of kindness, of suffering are all TOO real. An intense book and one that makes you rethink nearly everything you've ever believed about war, suffering and science. Hiroshima by John Hersey

See my separate post HERE for this very helpful book! Not only for homeschoolers, but for any parent who's kid is rotting in high school out of sheer boredom. College Without High School by Blake Boles.

I think I may have read this in the early 80s! Still, it has been a wonderful read! Queen Mary is such a fascinating person. How anyone could do such a deplorable job as a parent is still one of the mysteries of the world, but other than that! Her love of royal history and her single-minded pursuit of furniture, art, and other historic memorabilia which she then painstakingly cataloged and annotated is a legacy unlike any other royal figure ever. Her painful shyness [shared by her husband] left us with some of the sweetest love letters ever written--the only way the couple could express their love. A few things have been "revised" since this was written--most notably the claim that she had not read Tolstoy or Turgenev. The reason was rather simple: they had not yet been translated into one of the languages she did read. Her mania for ridding the world of ivy is hilarious and has many, many funny stories--most not reproduced here. Queen Mary by James Pope-Hennessy

This is simply one of the most interesting stories ever! You can read more at my earlier post on this book HERE.
