Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain. In a word: Mesmerizing! Ok, that's maybe a little bitty bit of an overstatement [especially for some of the post-war years], but you get the idea! I read over 200 pages in one day! I just couldn't put it down [well, till the post-war years]. Now I'm trying to get the Masterpiece Theater series of it somewhere--looks like it's only on VHS so that will have to do.
Cranford Since I am likely the most passionate fan ever of As Time Goes By, I'm up for just about anything featuring Judi Dench! Cutting out tv left me unable to enjoy this when it was broadcast on PBS, so I ordered it from Netflix. Just what I needed for an enjoyable Saturday of watching lovely costumed drama! I finished the first disc with the first 3 episodes. I can't wait for the weekend to get to the next three if they come in time!
I'll Climb the Highest Mountain is a typical early-50s love story. A young preacher's wife adapts to life in the hills of north Georgia at the turn of the 19th/20th Century. Sweet and enjoyable--perfect for Easter afternoons, since I'd neglected to request the Robe or Ben-Hur or A Man Called Peter--my traditional favorites for Easter!

Ahhhh ... these look like an escape to me - a very welcome one! I watched Cranford back when it was on PBS and thoroughly enjoyed it - wasn't it by "Mrs. Gaskill" who wrote an early biography of one of the Brontes? Made me curious to know a bit more about her.
I really don't know anything about the author--she was a "new one" to me! I'm waiting for Mom to finish them so I can send them back in to Netflix and get the last 3 discs!
I loved Cranford - book and series. Yes, Gaskell was a great friend of the Brontes..and she was a busy mother of six, wife of a minister, involved in parish affairs and social justice issues. Many of her letters to her friends, the Brontes, discuss her angst as a mother and trying to find time as a writer.
Leonie: Very interesting about the author.
